Setting Up System Center Essentials

Simple Setup

Looking for the simple steps to have a no-fail install from a fresh Win2K3 OS Install?

Look no further than this article on Installing SCE From Scratch.

Pre-requisites

Before trying to install SCE, make sure you have the following components installed on your Windows Server 2003 SP1 server...

SCE Server:

Windows Server 2003 SP1 Standard (or Enterprise) 32-bit

.NET Framework 2.0 Redistributable

WinFX Run-time components (July CTP)

IIS 6.0 installed and running

BITS 2.0 installed and running

Setup Locations

SCE must be installed on the system drive.  By default this is %SystemDrive%\Program Files\

You need approximately 4 - 5 Gig on the system partition free as the SQL currently cannot be placed anywhere else but the system partition, even though you get the chance to try and place it elsewhere during the setup.

Pre-Existing Software

SCE cannot be installed on a machine running current versions of WSUS.  There is no upgrade path at this time.  RTM versions of SCE will have an upgrade path from WSUS.

SCE cannot be installed on machines running older or newer versions of the .NET Framework 3.0 (WinFX July CTP).

Getting Help for your Setup Issues

By far the best way to get help for your setup issues is to use the Beta newsgroups.  Information on how to login to the newsgroups can be found on the connect.microsoft.com website.  Your server will be betanews.microsoft.com , then use your login and password you signed up with.  Fairly painless, and you'll get lots of attention there.

Troubleshooting Installation Problems

Issue #1:  Installation is failing, and I'm running my operating system in a locale other than English-US.

Resolution:  The only workaround for Beta 2 is to change your locale to English-US.  Note that if your domain controller is anything other than English-US, you may experience issues with the Feature Configuration (Policy) Wizard as well.

Issue #2:   Error 25156.Failed to create MOM database. Error Code: -2147217900 (MODIFY FILE encountered operating system error 112(There is not enough space on the disk.) while attempting to expand the physical file. CREATE DATABASE failed. Some file names listed could not be created. Check related errors.).

Resolution:   Clearing off some space on the SystemDrive cured the problem but you really need more free space than the installation wizard is suggesting.  At least 4-5 GB of space is required for the SCE setup itself, on the System Drive.

Issue #3:  MainEngineThread is returning 1639

Resolution:  This error can happen if you have specified a username or password that contains spaces (whitespace).  This is a known issue in Beta 2, and will be fixed in RTM.  Please specify a username and password that contains no spaces during setup.

Issue #4:  "Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Setup - The SQL Server System Configuration Checker cannot be executed due to WMI configuration on the machine **** Error:2148007941 (0x80080005)."

Resolution:  We are currently investigating this issue.  There is no workaround at this time.

Issue #5:  During the Installation Wizard it stops at the point where I need to enter username and password for the Administration Account. After entering I cant click "Next" to finish the installation dialog, its grayed out.

Resolution:  Your domain administrator account may be locked out.  This is because with each keypress in this box, SCE is trying to validate your password, sometimes causing you to exceed your "bad password" count.  Please copy/paste your password (from Notepad) into the password box, rather than typing it in.

Issue #6:  There are blank spaces in the user name or password values that you are specifying on the Administration account page

Workaround: Specify an username/password that does not have blank spaces in it

Issue #7:  Your Domain Administrator has set a password lockout policy after successive password validation failures?

Workaround:  Make sure your user account is not locked. Open Notepad and type the password that you want to specify on the Administration Account page. Copy password text from Notepad and paste it in the password field on Administration Account setup page.

Issue #8:  ASP.Net may not be registered correctly.

If you installed .Net Framekwork 2.0 before installing IIS, ASP.NET 2.0 is not registered in IIS.  Complete the following steps to register ASP.NET 2.0

1. From the cmdline, goto %WINDIR%\Microsoft.net\framework\V2.0.50727

2. Type "aspnet_regiis.exe –i" to re-register ASP.Net 2.0

Issue #9:  SQL Server 2005 Express install is failing

Workaround:
Delete SQL Server instance ‘SCE’ if it exists:
Navigate to ‘Control Panel’ -> ‘Add or Remove Programs’ and select ‘Microsoft SQL Server 2005’ item if it exists.
If ‘Microsoft SQL Server 2005’ exists, click ‘Remove’. In the next dialog if a SQL instance ‘SCE’ is shown, select and remove it.
Uninstall ‘Microsoft SQL Server Native Client’ also from ‘Add or Remove Programs’
Install SQL Express Advanced outside of SCE setup and select that database instance in SCE setup
You can find SQLEXPR_ADV.exe in %TEMP%\WZxxx.tmp\Setup folder. If you do not find this, run SQL2007Beta2.exe again.
If you have SQL server installed on a different machine, try selecting that SQL instance during SCE setup

Issue #10:  Default website is already configured for SSL.   You may experience error 1603 in your Setup.

Workaround: Configure your Default web site not to use SSL by following these steps:

1.    Select ‘Default web site’ from ‘Control Panel’ -> ‘Administrative Templates’ -> ‘Internet Information Services(IIS) Manager’
2.    Select Properties from the right click menu
3.    Select Directory Security tab and click ‘Edit’ button in ‘Secure communications’ section
4.    Uncheck ‘Require secure channel (SSL)’ option
5.    Install SQL Server 2005 Express Advanced outside of SCE setup
6.    Launch SCE setup again and select the existing SQL Express instance that you just installed.

Issue #11:  Installation is failing during the Ops Manager Install (Monitoring component of SCE)

Workaround:  There is no known workaround for this specific issue at this time.  Please post your setup log files below, and we can diagnose from there.

Issue #12:  Installation fails during Software & Updates portion (WSUS install).

Workaround:  This issue may be related to the latest version of IE7.  If you have installed IE7 via Windows Update, your server may be incompatible with the WSUS installation process.
